The essentials
Water and a collapsible bowl — pets dehydrate faster than you think, especially in cars. Pack more food than you need in an airtight container, plus any medications with a copy of the prescription. Bring your pet's vaccination record when crossing borders.
Safety in the car
An unrestrained pet is a hazard to everyone in the vehicle. Use a crash-tested harness that clips into the seat belt, a carrier secured with the belt, or a barrier for the cargo area. Never let dogs ride with their head fully out the window, and never leave pets alone in a parked car.
Comfort items reduce stress
A familiar blanket or toy carries the smell of home and noticeably calms most pets in new places. For anxious travellers, do a few short practice drives before the big trip and reward calm behavior throughout.
