Most dogs still need their daily exercise when it rains — and many actually enjoy it once they're comfortable. The key is the right gear: a well-fitted raincoat, quick paw care afterwards, and a towel routine that keeps your home dry too.
Fitting a raincoat properly
Measure your dog's back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, then check the size chart on the product page — sizes vary between styles. The coat should cover the back fully without restricting the shoulders, and you should be able to slide two fingers under the neck and belly straps.
For dogs between sizes, size up. A slightly loose coat is more comfortable than a tight one, and most designs have adjustable straps to fine-tune the fit.
Paw care after wet walks
Rinse or wipe paws when you get home, paying attention to the spaces between the pads where grit collects. Dry thoroughly — damp paws are the most common cause of irritation in wet seasons. A silicone paw cleaner cup makes this a 30-second job.
Make it positive
Introduce new rain gear indoors first with treats, keep the first rainy walks short, and reward calm behavior. Within a week most dogs associate the coat with walk time and get excited when it comes out.
