Indoor cats are safer from traffic and predators, but without the stimulation of the outdoors they rely on you for exercise and enrichment. A bored cat can become overweight, destructive, or withdrawn โ the good news is that 15โ20 minutes of structured play a day makes a huge difference.
Rotate toys weekly
Cats lose interest in toys that are always available. Keep a small basket of toys โ kicker fish, crinkle balls, feather wands โ and put out only two or three at a time, rotating them every week. Each rotation feels like new toys arrived.
Hunt, catch, eat, groom, sleep
The most satisfying play mimics a hunt. Use a wand toy to let your cat stalk, chase and finally catch the 'prey', then follow with a small meal or treat. This completes the natural hunting cycle and leaves cats calm and satisfied โ it's especially effective before bedtime for cats that wake you at night.
Use vertical space
Climbing is exercise too. Cat trees, shelves or even a cleared windowsill give your cat territory to patrol and a place to observe the world โ a window perch with a view of birds is hours of entertainment.
